Dr Ivan Schewitz was born in South Africa. He qualified as a doctor at Cape Town University in 1974 and qualified as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon under Prof CN Barnard with further studies in Johannesburg under Prof Kingsley. He has presented at many South African and international medical meetings with a number of publications. His special interests are Minimally invasive thoracic surgery (Thoracoscopy). He has directed a number of wet-labs in South Africa as well as one in Istanbul training surgeons in Thorascopic techniques. He was involved in Botswana in setting up a Cardiothoracic Unit in Gaborone. He is an executive member of the Chest Wall International Group (CWIG), and has introduced the Nuss procedure to South Africa
